Plot Your Character Arc First — Stop Rewriting Chapter One
Build the protagonist’s emotional journey before drafting so every scene has a clear purpose.

Start with the emotional destination
A clear character arc helps every scene contribute to the protagonist’s change. Define the starting mindset, internal wound, false belief, major obstacle, breakthrough and final transformation before polishing chapter one repeatedly.
Connect scenes to change
A useful scene should alter the plot, the character, or ideally both. If a scene leaves the protagonist emotionally and practically unchanged, it may need a stronger purpose.
Choose the arc type
Positive-change, flat and negative arcs create different story expectations. Decide which path you are building so the midpoint and ending reinforce the same emotional logic.
